CP Kelco Completes $60 Million Citrus Fiber Capacity Expansion Project

Strong Customer Demand & Market Potential Are Key Drivers
Behind New Production Line

ATLANTA (Apr. 29, 2024)CP Kelco, a global leader of nature-based ingredient solutions, has completed a $60 million expansion in production capacity for its citrus fiber product line, based on strong customer demand and market potential. With this significant expansion, the company has ample capacity to support current and future customers’ citrus fiber supply needs.

The production line expansion for NUTRAVA® and KELCOSENS™ Citrus Fiber in the company’s facility in Matão, Brazil, increases the total capacity to approximately 5000 MT, establishing CP Kelco as a leading citrus fiber supplier to food, beverage and consumer product manufacturers worldwide. This expansion provides options to incrementally expand capacity even further in the future based on customer needs.

Launched in 2019, CP Kelco’s citrus fiber products are highly versatile and unique ingredients upcycled from citrus peels, a byproduct of the juicing industry. With the continued growth in consumer demand for clean-label, sustainable products, citrus fiber addresses the need for nature-based and easily recognizable ingredients in a variety of food, beverage and personal care products.

“We are delighted about reaching this important milestone in our growth journey with citrus fiber, which continues to demonstrate tremendous versatility and potential across many application segments and geographic markets,” said Didier Viala, President of CP Kelco. “As a result of strong collaboration amongst our global team members and customers since its commercial launch in 2019, our citrus fiber has evolved into a robust product line with growing interest and demand, especially from those interested in meeting consumers’ needs for sustainably sourced and label-friendly products.”

“We look forward to serving even more customers and application segments with the significant expansion of our citrus fiber production capacity,” Viala added.

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber supports dietary fiber intake and offers unique water-binding, texturizing and stabilization capabilities in a wide range of food and beverage applications, from condiments, dressings and soups to bakery goods, dairy and plant-based products. In personal care products, KELCOSENS™ Citrus Fiber serves as a gentle emulsifier alternative, providing stabilization and a light skin feel to help product developers create SENSational textures, from serums to gels and luxe creams.

In 2023, NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber became the first citrus fiber in the industry to achieve upcycled certification from the Upcycled Food Association, now part of WhereFoodComesFrom, Inc. Then, in March 2024, KELCOSENS™ Citrus Fiber won the prestigious Cosmetics & Toiletries  Allē Award for best new natural/bio-derived ingredient.

Squeezing More Value Out of Fruit-Flavored Drinks

Thanks to the health and wellness trend, the juice category has experienced a spike in demand. After all, beverages are an easy way for busy consumers to add extra servings of fruits and vegetables to their diet, as well as immunity boosting vitamins. Parents also know it is easier to persuade a child to drink a fruity beverage than to eat a plate of brussels sprouts.

According to Innova Market Insights*, juices made with “real/natural” ingredients and less sugar are important to consumers around the globe, as are beverages that provide a source of vitamins, fiber, antioxidants and other “good for you” benefits.

Formulators' Focus

Consumers and beverage manufacturers are both on a search for value. Consumers are watching their wallets and looking for clean label-friendly products with less sugar, but they do not want to compromise on great taste. Manufacturers are looking for creative solutions to meet the challenges of higher costs, chaotic supply shortages and sugar reduction that can sometimes lead to reformulation.

How NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber Can Help

Meet the first Upcycled Certified® citrus fiber ingredient** on the market, NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber. We upcycle citrus peels, an abundant byproduct of the juice industry near our plant in Brazil. From juice byproduct to a great juice drink solution, it is quickly becoming the formulators’ secret for:

Observations
to Note

1. 4% sugar reduction in orange drink

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber may offer new opportunities for reducing sugar from 8% to 4% in a beverage with 20% orange juice. Besides enhancing viscosity, appearance and opacity, NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber supports body to help compensate for the lack of mouthfeel from the reduced sugar content. It is compatible with standard manufacturing processes, including a homogenization step. Because it is flexible towards low pH (3.0 – 3.4), there are also possibilities for new fruit flavor drink options as well.

2. 40% reduction in mango puree

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber may offer an opportunity to formulate mango drinks with up to a 40% reduction in the use of mango puree with similar stability, appearance and mouthfeel. Often, when the puree content is reduced, it can result in phase separation and pulp sedimentation as well as loss of mouthfeel and body. NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber supports building back mouthfeel and opacity and preventing phase separation.

3. 50% reduction in orange juice concentrate

In recent technical work, NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber supported mouthfeel enhancement and viscosity that may allow for a 50% reduction in the use of orange pulp/sac inclusions in an orange juice concentrate drink with 6% sugar.

Clean label is here to stay! The clean label mega trend is quickly becoming an important part of food formulations. The benefits of adding fiber to consumer products are numerous and increasingly gaining momentum. Using a recognizable, clean label-friendly ingredient while reducing the total number of ingredients in your product at the same time? Well, that’s a win-win with NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber.

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber is a next-generation fiber ingredient made from sustainably sourced citrus peels, an abundant byproduct of the juice industry. It supports dietary fiber intake and can help meet your clean label goals of a simpler, shorter ingredient list, or developing reduced-sugar or reduced-fat products. It also supports stability, suspension, body, and texture in a variety of applications including condiments, dressings, soups, baked goods, fruit flavored drinks, dairy yogurts & plant-based yogurt alternatives, and meat & meat alternative products.

Typical content of dietary fiber is at a minimum of 80% with an approximately balanced amount of soluble and insoluble fiber. This novel composition makes it suitable for a broad range of food and beverage products.

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber highlights:

  • Supports dietary fiber intake
  • Supports reduced-fat and reduced-sugar formulations
  • Supports gluten-free formulations

Discover the latest industrial innovation trends, insights and more!

Cellulose gum or carboxy methylcellulose (CMC) is an additive used in many food and beverage formulations to thicken, bind and emulsify. However, it may be perceived by consumers as not being clean label-friendly or “natural.” And for product developers, there may be challenges with supply reliability.

Depending on the functionality you are trying to achieve in your application, CP Kelco may have alternative ingredients that can help. Reformulation can even present an opportunity to save by using fewer ingredients overall, lowering cost in use, and cleaning up your label with nature-based, vegan-friendly ingredients. For example, easily recognizable GENU® Pectin is a label-friendly alternative that offers protein protection, great mouthfeel, texture and viscosity. KELTROL® Xanthan Gum is a workhorse ingredient that can provide mouthfeel and add viscosity. KELCOGEL® Gellan Gum can help you solve syneresis problems while offering stability, texture and mouthfeel. As an Upcycled Certified® ingredient*, NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber can help you meet your sustainability goals as it supports mouthfeel, viscosity and syneresis control.
