KELCOGEL® Gellan Gum, available only from CP Kelco, is a trusted and commonly used gelling agent that forms gels in contact with mono-, di- and multi-valent ions. KELCOGEL can be used to prepare structured liquids and gels.
Individually, or in combination, two forms of KELCOGEL can be used to provide flexibility in developing a wide range of gel functional performance properties. KELCOGEL gellan gum provides the opportunity for development of unique compositions and formulations with demanding functional requirements.
KELCOGEL® gellan gum solutions gel in the presence of ions typical of the lacrimal fluid. This unique feature provides the benefit of in situ gelation upon instillation of an ophthalmic pharmaceutical preparation. The gel formed upon contact with the lacrimal fluid may provide controlled or extended release of the active ingredients. This may further improve the retention of the instilled pharmaceutical preparation in the eye. The end result is improved controlled delivery of the active, making the treatment more effective and efficient; a benefit to the patient.
Formulating KELCOGEL gellan gum to give weak gelation, either by manipulating the ion type/concentration or KELCOGEL concentration, produces fluid gels. Gellan gum fluid gels are solutions with a weak gel structure.
They exhibit an apparent yield stress, i.e., a finite stress that must be exceeded before the system will flow. Fluid gel systems are very effective at suspending particulate matter. Their highly pseudoplastic flow provides extremely efficient suspension combined with low viscosity at higher rates of shear. In the eye, such performance would provide gelled solutions at rest, but would quickly flow under the shear of blinking. This performance helps improve patient comfort.

Oral Dosage Forms
KELCOGEL® Gellan Gum forms gels in contact with mono-, di- and multi-valent cation. KELCOGEL can be used to prepare structured liquids and gels. The gelling properties of KELCOGEL gellan gum provide an opportunity to produce a unique oral delivery system. KELCOGEL is easier to process and contain a lower gum concentration than alternative gel types.
Self-lubricating, easy-to-swallow oral dosage forms, with tailored mouthfeel can be created using the KELGOGEL concept. Intact gel dosage forms can easily be obtained from either aqueous solutions or suspensions of the active ingredient. In many cases, gelation is induced by the cationic counter ion of the drug substance, eliminating the need for an additional cation source. Consistent release may be obtained independently of the strength of the dosage form.
Compatible with most additives, the moist, jelly-like texture of KELCOGEL provides a self-standing, easy-to-swallow, oral dosage form with taste-masking possibilities.

Solutions of gellan gums produce excellent films, with possibilities for outstanding clarity and transparency. These films can be easily formed by a variety of methods. KELCOGEL CG-LA and KELCOGEL CG-HA gellan gums contain small amounts of ions in excess of the quantities needed to form films and coatings. Balancing the ionic strength of the film-forming environment allows the resulting film to be adjusted for versatile functionality, resulting in tailored, highly functional films and coatings.
A feature of these films and coatings is their ability to reproduce, in exact detail, the contours of the substrate onto which they are applied.
