CP Kelco offers an extensive range of biopolymers and cellulose ethers for rheology control in many different types of waterborne coating applications.

CP Kelco’s CELFLOW® cellulose ethers are cost-effective specialty additives for use in both interior and exterior architectural and decorative coatings. CELFLOW products will thicken aqueous solutions and control flow properties with economical advantages compared to products such as hydroxyethyl cellulose.

CELFLOW is a water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose. CP Kelco carefully selects our cellulose to meet the very strict quality requirements of the end product.

CELFLOW polymers are produced in a number of grades with a variety of specifications and performances. Advantages of using CELFLOW cellulose ethers versus products such as hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), ethylhydroxyethyl cellulose (EHEC), and synthetics can be realized, from cost savings to performance enhancement.

  • Excellent thickening and stabilizing agent, leading to in-can stability and excellent brushability, leveling, and customer appeal
  • Superior water retention, leading to longer open-time, which has become more critical with new, tighter VOC regulations
  • Excellent price performance
  • Easy dispersion and quick dissolution, which makes paint processing fast and easy
  • Equivalent or improved performance in:
    – Spattering behavior
    – Adhesion
    – Color float resistance

Having a broad range of CELFLOW products gives the paint manufacturer formulation design flexibility. The lower viscosity CELFLOW products show excellent low-shear properties (e.g., flow and leveling). The high viscosity CELFLOW products show excellent thickening efficiency, leading to either thicker paint with the same dosage or the same thickness at lower dosage.

All CELFLOW grades correspond with commonly used types of cellulose ethers in the market, including HEC, EHEC and MHEC products.
