Approximately 80 staff are employed at Knowsley. The site is organised to support the site Manufacturing Team in the production of high quality differentiated biogums. The Knowsley site covers 12 acres (48.75 hectares) of which, the buildings occupy 3 acres and house all the equipment, service and utilities necessary to support a modern, biotechnological manufacturing process. |
ProductionThe Knowsley plant primarily manufactures products based on xanthan gum but also has the capability to manufacture other biogum products. The range of these products includes pharmaceutical and food ingredients, as well as numerous industrial and oilfield applications. Over 30 different products are available. The site offers Identity Preserved (non-GMO) products primarily for the Eurpoean market. The manufacturing process is based on fermentation. The production unit incorporates the benefits of over thirty years of biogum manufacturing technology within Kelco, which is the world's leading manufacturer of water-soluble polysaccharide gums. This effective programme of process development has enabled the costs of manufacture to be controlled whilst continuously improving the quality of our biogums. The food grade products are manufactured in hygienic systems designed to meet the standards of the modern food and pharmaceutical industries. The Knowsley plant was the first biogum plant within Kelco to achieve ISO9000 registration in 1993 and is now registered as ISO9001:2000. The Manufacturing team is integrated to include Maintenance, Laboratory and Warehouse functions. The Manufacturing team is supported by the Technical, Finance, Materials, Administration, Information Technology and Safety and Environmental teams to provide a closely integrated manufacturing facility. None of the products manufactured at the Knowsley plant are sold directly to the public but are marketed in Europe, Africa, Australia and parts of Asia through the sales and distribution outlets of CP Kelco. |
The Community, Safety and the EnvironmentThe Knowsley plant and its people are committed to working towards achieving the goal of a safe, injury free workplace and minimising the impact of its operation on the environment and local community. The site strives to continually improve its operations in Safety, Health
and the Environment by setting specific safety and environmental goals
annually. These goals go beyond regulatory requirements and aim for best
industry practice. |
