The site is located on a former air base on the shore of the Baltic Sea near the village of Grossenbrode. The facility occupies 21 ha (53 acres) and has a population of approximately 150 employees. The Grossenbrode site began operation in 1950 and in 2000 was further automated and expanded. The site consists of 2 pectin production lines, an automated blending facility, a state of the art waste water treatment plant, a gas-fired boiler including turbo electrical generation, and numerous other manufacturing support and storage facilities. Major products processed at the facility are high methyl ester (HM) and conventional low ester (LMC) pectins.
Safety and EnvironmentalThe site is equipped with state of the art safety equipment in order to guarantee an undisturbed process and to prevent incidents. Yearly training is conducted with the outside local fire brigade. Recently conducted safety programs followed by all employees:
The plant treats all process effluents in its own waste water treatment facility. All alcohol-containing vapors are collected in an alcohol recovery installation in order to minimize the impact on the environment.
Community AwarenessCP Kelco's Grossenbrode site is playing an important role in the Grossenbrode community and contributes to the economic strength of the region. The plant has a good relationship with local and state authorities. Locally the plant supports the local school with personal computers and software plus sponsors local sports clubs and the voluntary fire-fighting brigade. The fire brigade is allowed to use plant facilities for training purposes. In 2000, the site received the Fire Brigade Partnership Award from the State of Schleswig-Holstein.
